>Essentials of music are seemingly simple. A considerate teacher helps by reminding you of the items that we all tend to forget.
Once settled with a straight back before the keyboard, notice there are two colors of keys; black and white. Cute Cuddly Compacent Coo Cat illustrates this nicely!
Anyway, the while keys on the bottom or nearest the bench are where we begin. A full 88 key keyboard has the first key at the bottom or on the left facing the piano. That first key is A, the next B, then C, D, E, F, G. Then the notes begin again with A and continue over and over until the top note or the last one on the right is C. Pretty easy, right?
Follow the white keys from left to right, notice the black keys in groups of two and three. The first white key to the left of each grouping of two black keys is a C. The first white key to the left of each grouping of three black keys is an F. This makes it easy to find all the other keys.
Middle C is the one nearest the name of the piano. A five finger ditty starting on C-D-E-F-G and back again F-E-D-C. Place the right thumb on C, pointer finger on D, middle finger on E, ring finger on F, little finger on G. Not repeating G, reverse the process F, E, D, C. Play that three times.
Use medium pressure to give each finger a good work-out. Most players find the 4th and 5th fingers to be weaker than the other two fingers and thumb. This is normal. As this ditty is repeated, the fingers become more and more flexable.
The left hand starts on the C to the left of middle C or one octaxe lower. Begin to listen to the sounds and learn the diference between high and low. Left hand five finger ditty has the little finger on the C below middle C, ring finger on D, middle finger on E, pointer finger on F, thumb on G Without repeating G, reverse the process F, E,D, C.
After the ditty feels comfortable with each hand alone, then s-l-o-w-l-y play then together. Play three times with hands together.
Another easy exercise that helps you get used to the groups is this:
At the Middle C two note group, play C – D – E, then reverse E – D – C. Play each group three times, saying aloud the letter names. Saying them aloud helps it stay in your mind better.
Then find the three black key note group to the right of E. F is the white key to the left of that group of black notes. Play F- G – A – B, B – A – G – F. You have now llocated and can become familiar with all seven notes and how to find them on the piano. Play the C group and the F group high and low to hear the sound of each group. Again this group of notes needs to be played three times while sying the note names aloud.
